Who We Are

Daniel Katz - Chair

Dan Katz headshot.jpgPrior to his current role as a nonprofit and business development consultant, Dan worked as the Assistant Director for the One Voice College Scholars Program in Los Angeles for four years. He also served on the Steering Committee of The Southern California College Access Network, which included two years as the Capacity Building Chair. Prior to that, Dan earned his BA from Washington University in St. Louis with a dual-degree in Comparative Literature and Spanish and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at UVA. Dan has lived in Charlottesville since 2011 after moving here with his wife, Veronica, who completed  her Ph.D in Education Policy at the Curry School of Education at UVA.

Gloria Rockhold Peña - Secretary

gloria foto.jpeg Gloria Maria Rockhold joined Albemarle County Public Schools in 2004 and is currently a Manager in the Office of Community Engagement. A native of Asunción Paraguay, Gloria's bi-cultural roots allow her to look at issues and opportunities from different perspectives in designing and implementing solutions for educational settings. An active member of the Latino community in Charlottesville, Gloria has worked with Creciendo Juntos for many years and is looking forward to leading this organization into a more hands on model to engaging with the Latino community. Gloria holds degrees in Marketing, Masters in Psychology and a Masters in Leadership and Foundations in Education at UVA. Executive Board Member of Creciendo Juntos since 2005, Charlottesville Free Clinic Board Member, Member of the Virginia Latino Advisory Board, Board Member of Citizens Advisory Committee for the Public Defender’s Office, 2010 Fellow of the Sorensen Political Leadership Class and Board Development Class of 2011 Graduate at the Center for Non-Profit Excellence.

Chiara Canzi - Vice Chair

Chiara was born in Milano, Italy and moved to Los Angeles sometime in the 1990s. She came to Charlottesville almost by chance, but mostly for love and she is, four years later, absolutely loving it. She started out as a news reporter with C-VILLE Weekly and made her way through the ins and outs of the city’s local government. She moved to marketing and PR for U.Va. Innovation and the U.Va. Licensing & Ventutes Group. Most recently, Chiara was the first Program Assistant for Market Central, a nonprofit that supports vendors and customers of the lively Charlottesville City Market. Chiara was involved with the Future Fund, a giving circle for residents in their 20s, 30s an 40s, for four years and served as the co-chair of the Steering Committee for one of those years. Jon Nafziger - Treasurer

Jon Nafziger Headshot.jpg Jon Nafziger has served as the Director of Donor and Partner Relations at the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation since June 2012. He previously worked as Vice President for Community Initiatives at the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area, including supervision Smart Beginnings and other early childhood programs. He holds a MA in Public Administration from the University of Virginia and a BA in Religion from Goshen College in Goshen, IN.

Cynthia Murray - Board Member

Cynthia Murray, founder and president of Cynthia Murray Enterprises, is an international motivational speaker, author, licensed (bilingual) attorney and leadership and success expert.  She gained much of her expertise from more than sixteen combined years of experience as a Virginia prosecutor and as a senior level business management professional for Northrop Grumman. Cynthia’s legal practice expertise is in contracts and criminal law. Cynthia received her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia where she lives and works.

Maria Williams - Board Member

Maria Williams is native of Bogotá, Colombia. Maria earned a B.A. degree at the University of Maryland with emphasis in dance and fieldwork studies in Special Education. Maria has been instrumental in creating various successful playgroups for Latino children in the Charlottesville area and in creating learning opportunities for many Latino families. Maria has been a proud member of the Creciendo Juntos Executive Board since 2009. She helped establish and then led the CJ Education Workgroup for three years. Presently, Maria Williams works at Agnor Hurt Elementary School in Charlottesville.
