Una red para la Comunidad Latina en Charlottesville, Virginia

Statement from Creciendo Juntos

The past month has been terrifying—the rally in August and today's DACA announcement are symptomatic of a broad and hostile climate for immigrants. As we continue to process this hostility, I want to reaffirm the values Creciendo Juntos stands for and the role CJ will continue to play in our community.

CJ began over ten years ago as a supportive voice for the Latino community. While we have made great progress over the past decade, there is clearly much work to be done.  Contemporary politics threaten the safety and security of our neighbors, many of whom need our support and advocacy now more than ever.

CJ has always stood for building equity through dialogue and transparent access to information and resources. We believe that providing reliable information, meaningful networking opportunities, and culturally sensitive trainings empower our community to be better individual and collective agents of change. We also believe that committed groups of volunteers can affect policy and practice in our community, making it a better place for all who live here.

As an organization, we are motivated to partner with the many individuals and organizations invested in equity for Latinos and all immigrants. Through this work, we will build stronger coalitions that avoid service duplication and make lasting progress. Ultimately, we will help the Latino community access the services and opportunities existing in our community and, at the same time, empower our community to expand its capacity to provide these services.

As a community, we need to speak directly to each other in action-oriented forums. We need to address and unpack inequality in Charlottesville and we need to collaborate efficiently. There is much to do, and CJ is ready to continue to be a part of the solution.
