Learn Spanish

Charlottesville has both fee based and no cost opportunities to learn Spanish.

Fee based classes are offered by UVA, Piedmont Community College, Speak! and others, some which provide individual instruction.

Occasionally, Speak! also provides free conversational classes.

“Tertulia” is a custom common in many parts of Latin America. Groups meet at the same time, same place, every day, once a week, or once a month, usually at a café, to discuss the news, politics and other issues. In the U.S. a Spanish conversation group is a kind of tertulia offering participants an opportunity to build on their basic Spanish language skills by listening to and speaking the language. While attendance is not mandatory, the quality of these groups is sometimes linked to the regular attendance of its members.
