CJ-UVA Short Term Work Groups
For three years (2006 – 2009), CJ collaborated with UVA Spanish Department professors to help them identify projects that would engage their students in the local Latino community. They included:
- class presentations by persons knowledgeable of the Latino community
- telephone surveys, conducted in Spanish, of government and non-profit agencies to ascertain what reactions they have to Spanish language callers
- door-to-door canvassing to advise Latinos of their legal rights to an interpreter
- a play and read group for Latino children in Southwood
- involving students as interviewers in a state-wide Red Cross survey of Latinos
- interviewing Latinos to prepare articles about them or the initiatives they are involved in and publishing these articles in the Spanish newspaper Nuevas Raíces
UVA Professors included: Patricia Regan (2006, 2007) and Amy Frazier-Yoder (2008, 2009)
CJ members included: Peter Loach (Piedmont Housing Alliance) and Tim Freilich (Legal Aid Justice Center), who provided class presentations in 2007, and Linda Hemby, who also provided class presentations (2006, 2007) in addition to project ideas, a mini-interviewing training (2009), contacts, site visits, maps, and other resources. Too, CJ member Carolina Parietti provided a venue to UVA students – her newspaper Nuevas Raíces – to publish articles.
