How We Work

CJ utilizes many mechanisms to inform and educate, to promote and facilitate partnerships, to strengthen existing initiatives and to identify and support new ones.

Complementing its online clearinghouse is the CJ Newsletter, which notifies recipients of upcoming meetings and events, new resources, bilingual job opportunities and volunteers, and other information related to learning about or improving services to our local Spanish-language community. To use or subscribe to the newsletter, contact cj.cville@gmail.com.

The CJ Calendar will also keep you informed of upcoming events and opportunities relevant to area Latinos and the service providers working with them.

CJ Workshops are training events – a panel, presentation, or roundtable discussion – that focus on a specific topic related to our local Latino population. Their purpose is to equip service providers and interested community members with information and resources to strengthen existing  initiatives or generate new ones for Latinos.  Each workshop also offers an excellent opportunity to disseminate information and written materials, to learn about what is going on locally, and to network and explore partnerships.  Please email us  if you would like to present on your work with or about the local Latino/Hispanic community at an upcoming CJ workshop: cj.cville@gmail.com. Workshops are free and open to the public and conducted in English. Ten workshops take place each year between the months of September and June, usually on the second Thursday of the month, from 10:00 – 11:30 am in the Albemarle County Building on 5th Street.  Registration, coffee and refreshments begin at 9:40 am.

CJ Work Groups: In addition to attending monthly workshops and serving Latinos through their jobs, some CJ members participate in CJ Work Groups, which  focus on a specific neighborhood or health or other issue; organize forums, health events, help fairs, and other activities for Latinos; and network and partner with service providers working with Latinos locally, in Richmond, Harrisonburg, and elsewhere.

Other CJ members participate in the Executive Committee, which meets monthly to move the network forward.
